Can you hear the living breath of the mawwal? The beauty of muwashshah poetry and the passionate melodies of the maqam? These artistic pearls combine to form the intricate necklace that is Syrian music. Yet what happens if a guardian of these traditions opens the door to the world and all its influences?
This enchanting show will introduce audiences to singer Maïs Harb, serving as a window into her artistic evolution. Follow her journey as a gorgeous tapestry of sounds, cultures, and rhythms unfolds.
Immersed in the folk songs of her native Syria from a young age, Maïs Harb soon discovered the music of Fayrouz, and her path was set. Maïs left her village to attend the most prestigious music schools in Damascus, training as a singer with a series of rigorous voice teachers. So begins the story of this performer known for her smooth, velvety vocals. From her humble roots in rural Syria, Maïs Harb rose to the international stage through numerous projects and artistic collaborations, eventually returning to the land of her birth, her voice imbued with new and unexpected musical colors.
A faithful defender of her country’s musical heritage, Maïs Harb is not afraid to draw inspiration from cultures the world over, and this evolving perspective is reflected in her music. Armed with a fresh artistic vision informed and influenced by her many travels, Maïs Harb’s perspective is that of a Syrian, but also of a foreigner. Returning to My Native Syria tells the story of this deeply moving transformation, a tale of coming home following a profound metamorphosis.
